Gramercy Park, at the center of this area, is the sole surviving "private residential park" in the city, and is surrounded by landmark townhouses and prewar buildings; it is an urban oasis that takes you back to what life must have been like in the 1800s. The Village has been a desirable place to live for decades. The streets are still laid out along the original 18th century farm lanes and property lines before city planners superimposed the grid patterns on the rest of Manhattan. The crooked, quirky streets and mostly land marked brownstones of the Village make you feel that the neighborhood stopped in time well over a century ago. There is very little zoning for high rises, so there's more sky to look at, giving the neighborhood a more cozy feel. But, fewer apartment options mean higher prices in this area. Even though it has plenty of nightlife, the far West Village is considered quieter than the central Village which is home to New York University, Washington Square and Bleecker Street, a famous stretch of music bars, Off-Broadway theaters, restaurants and novelty shops.
The most recent significant gentrification of a neighborhood has happened in what, for practical purposes, has been known as the Meat Packing District – alas, because the neighborhood is home to several commercial butchers who distribute meats from their warehouses to city-wide restaurants. While the meat packing business continues to operate in early morning hours, the late night hours transform the neighborhood into a "meet market" – the city's most fashionable fill the many restaurants, bars and nightclubs to capacity – spilling out onto the cobblestone streets in their stiletto heels.

A never before dreamed of renaissance has finally taken root in Harlem. This famous neighborhood has been invaded by the likes of Bill Clinton, The Gap, Loews Cineplex Theatres, Starbucks and Disney. The area is hot, and adventurous buyers are clamoring to purchase unloved brownstones and townhouses for a steal and then renovate them – sometimes all it takes is a little TLC.
Morningside Heights is perhaps one of the most truly economically diverse parts of the city, with academic life and stately Columbia University at its center. Students from Columbia University, Barnard College, Manhattan School of Music and the Jewish Theological Seminary populate a good part of the area. Known for its strong community and generations of families that wouldn't dream of living anywhere else, this area attracts those looking for diversity, an intellectual climate and slightly less expensive housing.

The last area that New Yorkers would have bet would have become cool, The Lower East Side has gone the way of every other formerly fringe neighborhood on this island. Up until yesterday, it seems, the Lower East Side was what it had always been, a population of immigrants who had turned the area into six-story residential tenement buildings; an exotic emporium for inexpensive fabrics, clothes, leather goods and mom-and-pop Jewish delicatessens. Now it's shabby chic. The young are claiming the area and the trendy bars, cafes and performance spaces are proof. You can still get more value on housing, however, but it's definitely not the low rent district of yester year.
Hidden away, the Lower East Side is home to some of the more experimental boutiques and bars. It has become home to struggling artists and musicians – stealing some of the energy and interest from the East Village, blended with the pre-existing culture of the Lower East Side.

This is the internationally famous financial district that lies on the Southern most tip of Manhattan. There is tremendous activity here during the workday, but the area mellows at night and on the weekends. It is the newest residential outpost with office buildings being converted into apartment buildings. Residential amenities such as dry cleaners, grocery stores and coffee shops are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood to service homesteaders who like the idea of rolling out of bed to their office.
Battery Park, which once stood in the shadows of the World Trade Center, is once again thriving and is still very popular with the finance industry due to its close proximity to Wall Street. It was developed as a brand new city within a city, with waterfront views, situated along the Hudson River at the southwest tip of Manhattan. This gorgeous neighborhood on the water was built to reflect urban suburbia at its best and to accommodate people who didn't want to commute from uptown. This development was exquisitely planned with charming streets, boardwalks, parks and playgrounds. Those who like the hustle and bustle of Manhattan will sense the comparative calm of this tranquil oasis.

Refinement, elegance and world-class culture define this area. The area from Central Park's Fifth Avenue to Park Avenue may have the most expensive real estate in the country. It is renowned for it's prewar,white-glove co-ops, which, in recent years, have seen prices in the $3-30 million dollar range with multiple bids on each. The residential ambiance along with art galleries, designer boutiques, renowned museums, coveted private schools and fine restaurants all combine to put the Upper East Side in the international spotlight.
A quintessential small neighborhood on the Upper East Side,Yorkville, for it's residents, is a well guarded secret. Just slightly east of the beaten path, it's tranquility, elegant old-style architecture, and less trafficked, Carl Schultz Park, make this neighborhood as gentile as it gets. It's also home to Gracie Mansion, The Mayor's residence, which sits right in the center of the park on the East River. A beautiful boardwalk runs the length of the park on the river, offering a peaceful place to bike, jog and stroll. The drawback is that Yorkville is several long blocks from the Lexington Avenue Subway, and those who like being in the middle of the action, will find this place too peaceful and refined.

If you like the frenzy of living in the thumping heart of a working city, this is the area for you. This is where you will find an extraordinary blend of incomes and backgrounds from descendants of European Immigrants; a more recently arrived Asian and Latin American population to yuppies working in nearby midtown.
Formerly known as Hell's Kitchen, residential developers thought a name change would better reflect an area being slowly gentrified to include an enclave of towering residential high rises with in-door amenities to rival any luxury building uptown. And now that the Times Square area is attracting so many upscale corporations, this neighborhood allows for a walk-to-work commute. Last but not least, the northern corner of Clinton, an area called Columbus Circle at 59th Street and Central Park, is mid-way through a complete renovation that will turn it into a major destination for locals and tourists alike.

Many describe this area as a slice of tranquility in the middle of working Manhattan. Lying just south of Grand Central Station and the Midtown office district, this area is defined by brownstones on tree-lined side streets and high rises on the avenues. The area has managed to hold on to its original character, and its lifelong residents are fiercely loyal to the neighborhood. The UN and several major hospitals also add a diverse mix of doctors and diplomats to its residency.
The stroller-zone of the Upper East Side has made its way to Murray Hill – making this area a hot-bed for young families who still want to remain close to the nightlife and fine dining they love downtown. With so many hospitals claiming the eastern side of First Avenue, this neighborhood also attracts a lot of doctors and doctors-intraining.

Noho, which stands for North of Houston, is located between Greenwich Village and the East Village. Formerly a commercial and industrial district, Noho went residential in the late 80s and 90s,when the dot-comers got priced out of Soho. Now, deals are no longer to be had. It's known for its chic restaurants, the famous Joseph Papp Public Theatre and Joe's Pub on Lafayette Street and classic old mom-and-pop stores along side super stores such as Barnes & Noble and Tower Records. Noho, like Soho is zoned as mixed-use for light manufacturing.
Once an area simply named Little Italy, known for its local Italian eateries and modest living, it is now considered more of an East Soho. The less expensive walk up buildings attract a young and trendsetting clientele of artists and well-to-do professionals. Once home to Italian immigrants, the original architecture and cobble stone streets with old-world names such as Mulberry and Mott still grace the area. Gentrification is hard to miss, however, with renovated residential buildings and the sprouting of cafes, boutiques and nightclubs. Chinatown has begun to influence the neighborhood as it steadily creeps northward up to Canal Street.

Soho, which stands for South of Houston, was once an area zoned exclusively for artists and their studios with their storefront galleries at ground level. The haute revitalization of Soho has pushed the artists out and up to the Chelsea area where they can still find affordable work and living spaces. Now it's all about high-end retail shopping, high-end galleries, high-end eateries, and high-end tourists. The blessing is that Soho still retains its spectacular European-style, old world architecture and cobblestone streets.
Soho is home to many of the city's greatest spas. Within blocks from each other are Bliss, Skincare Lab, Haven, SoHo Sanctuary, Aveda Institute, Amore Pacific, – plus beauty stores like Fresh, L'Occitane,Face Stockholm, and Sephora.

This word stands for the triangle below Canal and includes the areas bound by Canal St. on the North, Lafayette and Chambers on the East and the Hudson River on the West. Designer lofts, Robert DeNiro's film studio and restaurant, and constant celebrity sightings give the area a certain buzz.

Greek coffee shops, appliance stores and mom-and-pop shops still line the commercial streets with little change since the 1930's. Tudor City feels like a private world from a more tranquil era, hidden away from the din and hubbub of Manhattan. Ornamental,Tudor-style apartment buildings, built in 1927, are set on a hill amongst tree-lined streets and serene parks overlooking the United Nations.

Between First and Second Avenue, more affordable brownstones, Postwar and elevator buildings appeal to younger professionals who want to live within walking distance to their midtown offices.
